The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has recorded a reduction in the number of examination malpractices in the 2020 Uganda Certificate of Examinations-UCE.
According to UNEB, a total of 1,292 examination results will be withheld compared to 1,825 in the previous year.
Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Secretary attributes the decrease in cases to the new measures set up by the examination board.
Some of the new measures that were introduced were random numbers, delivery of examinations a few minutes to the start time and also a change in the selection of examination officials.
Last year as part of examination security, officials were chosen from different parts of the country. For instance in Kampala, examination officials were picked from Soroti and other far to reach areas as a means to reduce colluding with schools.
UNEB notes that the majority of the malpractices were reported in science subjects: physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. Odongo says the most common form of malpractice was recorded external assistance.
The schools whose results have been withheld will be notified through their school portals. Odongo cautioned schools about conmen trying to make money from schools under the pretext of releasing withheld results.
According to the UNEB examination security guidelines, the affected schools will be invited for a hearing and defend themselves.
A total of 330,592 candidates sat for the examinations. 311,233 candidates passed the examination while 18,415 failed and will have to resist examinations next year.
