A section of traditional herbalists in Bunyoro are seeking for approval from National Drug Authority for their herbal drug they claim it can heal Coronavirus disease-Covid-19.
The group under the Bunyoro Kitara Herbalists Association claim they have been conducting research about the effectiveness of their herbal drug for the last one year and it was found to be curative.
The drug named Murungi is in form of a syrup manufactured from different herbs, explains Deo Kakura, the chairman for Bunyoro Kitara Herbalists Association.
Kakura explains that there are other four individual herbalists who have also produced herbal drugs that they claim can be used in the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
Kakuru claims they have submitted their samples to National Drug Authority-NDA, the regulator for human and animal drugs for tests and approval. He says Bunyoro is rich in medicinal trees which can cure many diseases.
However, Christopher Luzinda, the regional manager NDA said the Authority has not approved any herbal drug for covid-19.
He however welcomed all the attempts by different herbalists in producing drugs for covid-19 and attempt to follow the right procedures as he cautioned against putting it on the black market.
