The National Identification and Registration Authority-NIRA is in the process of rolling out a new countrywide registration for all learners at all levels of education.
The registration process will ensure that all learners get National Identification Numbers-NINs and unique Learner Identification Numbers, and enable continuous follow-up and progress assessment of each learner through the education levels.
The project which is part of the re-developed Education Management Information System (EMIS) has been designed to minimize corruption, track learners’ performance, even if they change schools, and improve data management in the education sector.
Ketty Lamaro, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports says that the exercise will begin in July this year targeting learners in senior one and two in all government and private secondary schools before being rolled out to other classes.
The ministry has decided to begin with the aforementioned classes given the fact that there is an overdue need for the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) to collect school-based evaluations for the first cohort of students studying under the new lower secondary curriculum.
