Students who intend to join the proposed Bunyoro University and other beneficiaries will have to wait a little longer as consultations about its full operations are set to kick off in the financial year 2023/2024.
While reading the national budget for the financial year 2022/2023 at Kololo independence grounds on Tuesday, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija revealed that “consultations to operationalize Bunyoro University will commence in the next financial year 2023/2024”, while operationalization of Moon constituent college of agriculture, mountains of the moon and Busoga universities will take effect in the next financial year 2022/2023.
Speaking to our reporter in a phone interview, Jacob Karubanga, the chairperson of Bunyoro parliamentary caucus says the proposed university is currently planned for as a project under the ministry of education and sports.
He adds that there is a provision of 2 billion shillings out of the 60 billion shillings allocated to the three universities to facilitate the task force of the university. He says the university will open to the public in the 2023/2024financial year.
Karubanga reveals that the task force will be responsible to initiate the university establishment processes, designing a curriculum, formulating development and infrastructural plans before writing a complete document that will be presented to parliament. He adds that the university establishment will commence in the FY 2022/24
Last week, Asinansi Nyakato, the Hoima City Woman MP during celebrations to mark the 28th coronation anniversary of the Omukama of Bunyoro at the Kingdom chambers revealed that Bunyoro University was left out in the National budget for the financial year FY 2022/2023 causing a lot of murmuring among the guests.
She said once a budget is approved by parliament, the remaining programs and projects are extended to the next financial year adding that even the steering committee activities may take long to fruition to enable the university to kick off.
